The Rise of the Supper Club

Supper clubs, an enchanting blend of dining and socialising, have roots that trace back to mid-20th century America. These exclusive, often clandestine gatherings originally emerged as intimate spaces where people could enjoy gourmet meals in a relaxed, convivial atmosphere. Typically held in private residences, undisclosed locations, or one-of-a-kind venues, supper clubs underscore a sense of community and shared experience. They foster connections among guests through communal tables and interactive dining experiences, offering a unique twist to the traditional dining scene.

Dubecki (2007, p.2) describes a ‘supper club’ in its most literal form as an 'unlicensed, illegal, and transient entity.' Williams (2009,p.10) offers a more nuanced definition, stating that supper clubs are "across between a restaurant and a dinner party, like a restaurant in the sense that you pay, like a dinner party in the sense that you are in someone’s house, with a regular someone cooking." While the menus are often prix fixe and focus on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, the real allure of supper clubs lies in their unpredictability and charm. They offer a culinary adventure that breaks away from the norm of a conventional restaurant setting. In recent years, these clubs have experienced a renaissance, drawing in food enthusiasts and those seeking a unique, immersive gastronomic journey. We are fortunate, here in the Cotswolds, to have some exceptional supper clubs on offer. Below, we explore four distinct supper clubs which we, here at Come & Stay, are eager to experience.
